In Franz Schubert's song cycle "Winterreise" a young man tries to forget the pain of love. He sets out on a hike to overcome the injuries and the fraud. Franz Brenninger (Josef Bierbichler) has to break out of his familiar environment to find himself in order to understand his life. Hans Steinbichler portrays impressively the life of a man who only realizes when it is almost too late that he has lived past his life.
The drama is about a person who thinks he has lost his whole life and never really finds his place. He constantly searches for the meaning of his existence and thus becamomes completely restless. Bierbichler skilfully brings this unrest to the screen. The theater actor easily alternates between moments of joy and zest for action and moments of dejection and sadness. "Winterreise" is a successful, very modern interpretation of Schubert's song cycle.
