It is a good tradition of the Five Lakes Film Festival to show feature films and short films from Taiwan, which can bring closer not only the film country, but also the way of thinking, the society and the nature of this Asian island. In cooperation with the Taipei Representative Office in the Federal Republic of Germany (Munich Office), we have been opening the view on Taiwan and Taiwanese cinema for many years and would like to promote the relations between two cultures as well as the political cohesion, which has become very important especially in these days.
The long-standing partnership between the district of Starnberg and New Taipei (former district of Taipei) began in 1980 with the visit of a military parachuting delegation from Taiwan (Republic of China) to Starnberg on the occasion of their participation in the World Championships in Altenstadt/Schongau. The resulting contacts with Taipei County led to the official invitation of a county delegation to Taipei one year later. Taiwan is located about 160 kilometers from the southeast coast of mainland China in the Pacific Ocean, halfway between Korea and Japan in the north and Hong Kong and the Philippines in the south. The island nation has a population of about 20 million.
